Ethical, legal and social perspectives on Euthanasia in Peru

Abstract

Euthanasia is a complex issue that requires an interdisciplinary approach, since it concerns a human issue that places in tension the scope of the right to life, individuality, the right to die, dignity, among other aspects. It is a human issue, addressed internationally; however, in the Peruvian case, this discussion has been highlighted due to the discussion raised in the case of Ana Estrada, who obtained judicial authorization to exercise the right to die under her conditions, setting a precedent in the history of the nation, bringing to the dialogue legal, cultural, religious and ethical aspects. In this order of ideas, the article analyzes the issue of euthanasia in the Peruvian context, considering its ethical and social dilemmas, opting for a Christian perspective, which assumes the inherent value of life, its safeguard and protection. The method used is that of documentary exploration. It is concluded that the lack of solid regulatory frameworks at international and national level violates the rights of vulnerable sectors, leading them to consider euthanasia as an option in the face of suffering, the breakdown of health systems and family precariousness.
