Clarifying the symbolic universe of the thought of Miguel de Unamuno

Abstract

Only by reading Miguel de Unamuno from a diachronic perspective, and investigating the helicoidal way he has of constructing his work, the unity of meaning that runs through all his literary production, and all his life, appears. He began as a very young intransigent fuerista, member of the Euskalerriac Societies, until he became the most important intellectual we have had, from the defense of the liberal thesis. Understanding liberal as in the nineteenth century: defender at all costs of each and every one of the freedoms of individuals. Therefore, I maintain that its real crisis is that of 1883: the change of traditionalist intellectual structures, for liberal and progressive ones. A position from which Unamuno will not depart one iota. From this liberal interpretation, the concepts of Faith, God and Christ make sense, used as desacralized theological categories, to incite the social transformation of reality from the freedom of the individual
