Ethical statement and good editorial practices


Clio: Journal of History, Human Sciences and Critical Thinking is an organ of periodic dissemination of peer-reviewed research of international scope attached to Ediciones Clío, The Academy of History of the state of Zulia and  Zulian Center for Genealogical Research. Clío is committed to the scientific community in meeting high standards of ethical behavior and good practices at all stages of the publication process and ensuring the quality of published articles.

Our online journal, supported by the Open Journal System (OJS), pays special attention to security aspects that help protect the data and metadata of all publications. This is part of the compendium of principles referenced in the Code of Conduct and good practices that define academic organizations, such as the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Department of Publications of the University of Oxford (DOAJ), the Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association (OASPA) and the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME). These organizations identify transparency principles and best practices for editors, authors and referees of scientific journals in general to apply in their academic and scientific publications.

In addition to the organizations mentioned, Clío voluntarily adheres to the framework of Scopus: Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement RequirementsOur Code of Ethics and Good Editorial Practices is a compilation of the articles published by the aforementioned organizations, with the aim of guaranteeing an adequate response to the needs of readers, authors, reviewers, members of academic committees and editors, ensuring the quality of the articles, protecting and respecting the content of the articles, as well as their integrity.

General principles of publication

These principles cover honesty, transparency, communication, integrity, responsibility, respect, in all aspects of research; in addition to the above, Clío provides specific policies for authors, reviewers, editors and the Editorial Committee.

Editorial independence: We are committed to editorial independence. In all cases we avoid conflicting interests or influences of any kind.

Open access: Clío defends an editorial policy of open access to its content, based on the principle of offering the public free access to research, to help a greater global exchange of knowledge and enrich the scientific and cultural heritage of humanity as a whole.

The magazinedoes not require payment for downloading documents, only the authors make a financial contribution Article Processing Charges (APC) according to the characteristics of the manuscript, to cover the management costs of the refereeing process and the verification of originality with the commercial anti-plagiarism tool used. At the editorial level, the operating costs of the website and other administrative costs are channeled through the Fundación Ediciones Clío.

Academic freedom: We do not discriminate against authors, editors or reviewers based on their personal characteristics or identity. We are committed to incorporating diversity, eliminating barriers to inclusion, promoting equality of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality, religion and disability throughout the publication process. We reject any abusive behavior towards people who participate in the editorial process; in case of a claim, it must be made through the contact specified on the journal's website.

Editorial process: From the moment the authors send their manuscripts to the journal, we guarantee:

  • the rigorous and fair pre-review before sending to the reviewers, according to the areas of competence. This process is carried out as they are received. The manuscript is subjected to verification of originality to detect duplicate or plagiarized content, for this purpose the online anti-plagiarism tool DupliChecker is used in its commercial version, which also allows comparing the entered text with databases to identify similarities, and the grammatical and spelling review.  
  • Double-blind peer review, in accordance with the standards established on the Clío web portal, which can be consultedhere.
  • overseeing the peer review process to protect the confidentiality and anonymity of participants.
  • the processing of the manuscript for publication, in the order in which they are accepted, regardless of the subject matter addressed.
  • The assignment of the Digital Object Identifier (DOI).
  • publication in one of the two issues per year, depending on the periodicity. The journal does not publish special issues. Likewise, it is declared that there are no limits on the publication of articles by country or geographical position, since they can be proposed from anywhere in the world and published once approved by the Editorial Committee.

Responsibility of the authors

Authors who request the publication of their works in Clío will guarantee:

  • strict adherence to and acceptance of the editorial criteria established by this journal.
  • the originality of the articles as products of their work as researchers and that the data presented have been obtained in an ethical manner, for which reason they must send a letter of originality, stating that they do not infringe copyright.
  • the exact spelling of their surnames and names, as per their identification documents, as well as their email addresses, institutional affiliations and Orcid. If any spelling error is made, request a change by email to the editor.
  • that co-authored works will have a justification that expresses the full consensus of adherence to the research guidelines of all the authors involved.
  • that the work has not been reviewed or published in another journal or any other means of dissemination.
  • that are not claiming redundant publication, meaning when two or more documents share the same data, hypotheses, discussion points or conclusions.
  • respect for the authorship of all sources used in the preparation of the article, including images, graphs, figures, tables and any other type of material; for this reason, they must provide the exact data of the bibliographical, newspaper, electronic or other references, as well as the method and data collection techniques that made their work possible. They also undertake not to omit any significant material.
  • that the content of the article contains sufficient details and references to allow its reproduction, without making fraudulent or inaccurate statements, this aspect is unethical and unacceptable.
  • attention to editorial and academic observations and opinions in a timely and clear manner. When for various reasons one does not agree with the criteria and observations made by the referees, always made with the aim of improving the article, one must justify one's position in writing to the editor, who is the competent authority to decide what is most appropriate.
  • Failure to comply with any of the above points constitutes unethical and unacceptable conduct; consequently, the proposed article will be deleted and will not be considered for publication. Likewise, the author will not be considered for any activity related to the journal.

Responsibility of reviewers

The reviewers (evaluators) of the Clío Journal:

  • They undertake to maintain the confidentiality of information relating to the articles they evaluate.
  • They only accept manuscripts related to their areas of knowledge.
  • makes significant considerations with supporting arguments, on the aspects to be improved in the manuscript, without expressing inappropriate personal criticism of the author. The goal is to achieve a quality final work.
  • They undertake to issue their opinion in an objective, impartial, responsible and rigorous manner.
  • They demonstrate a willingness to clarify doubts and all matters related to compliance at each of the stages involved in the arbitration or evaluation process.
  • meet the estimated times for the arbitration process, fill out and send to the editor the instrument for arbitration of articles, available on the magazine's website.

In the event of any breach of the above points, the journal reserves the right to revoke your membership in the portfolio of referees.

Responsibility of editors

In compliance with the COPE Code, the editors of Clío magazine:

  • guarantee the integrity of academic literature.
  • comply with the laws on confidentiality of individual information throughout the editorial process. Therefore, they do not accept manuscripts submitted using a generative Artificial Intelligence tool, as this violates the confidentiality and property rights of the authors.
  • They may not make any type of dissemination or distribution of the information presented in the article they are evaluating until the time it is published by the journal.
  • make usage metrics and reporting of the editorial process available to the general public.
  • clarify doubts to authors and reviewers in the evaluation and editing process in the heat of their specific activities, in accordance with the parameters of our editorial policy.
  • They promote accessibility, diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of the publishing process.
  • They base editorial decisions solely on academic merit, free of bias and exclusionary environments.
  • They ensure compliance with the review, editing, evaluation and publication times of the works. In the event of any delay, the authors must be informed of the reason and given the opportunity to withdraw the manuscript if they so decide.
  • The dates of receipt and acceptance are published in the article.
  • They ensure impartiality both in the reception of articles and in the evaluation decision.
  • They act at all times in accordance with editorial criteria and the editorial line.
  • They guarantee compliance with the double-blind academic review system, so the journal is committed to safeguarding the anonymity of authors and reviewers.
  • They inform the authors in writing of the outcome of the review process (arbitration).
  • They guarantee the digital preservation and long-term accessibility of the contents in different online bibliographic databases, both their own and open access, with weekly backups, organized in media that guarantee their integrity. The preservation actions implemented are: data rejuvenation, consistency verification and technological updating.

Responsibility of the Editorial Board

  • Monitor the editorial content and update the journal's topics based on scientific advances, as well as regulations and instructions.
  • promote the journal in order to obtain potential authors.
  • evaluate the results of the application of scientific strategies and propose updates, if necessary.
  • Advise researchers on editorial ethics standards.
  • Provide guidance to other staff involved in the editorial process regarding compliance with current regulations and contributions generated by teamwork.

Retraction, correction and errata policy

Clio:Journal of History, Human Sciences and Critical Thinking, in attention to the COPE Retraction Code, undertakes to retract any article that, after the relevant review during the editorial process, is found to contain research misconduct due to non-compliance with the ethical and scientific standards of the discipline, redundant publications, plagiarism, conflict of interest; in addition, serious erroneous and unreliable data.

The retraction will be carried out in a transparent manner, the final decision rests with the editor of the journal. The Editorial Committee will inform the authors of the reasons for the retraction by email and it will be published both on the journal's website and in bibliographic databases. If minor errors are detected that do not significantly affect the content and/or understanding of the same, the author is notified so that he/she can proceed with the correction. If the error depends on the edition or production of the journal, an errata is issued that will be published in the following edition.

Conflict of interest policy

Clio:The Journal of History, Human Sciences and Critical Thinking ensures that any publication is free from undue influence, whether financial, non-financial, professional, contractual or personal in nature, on the submission, review or publication of the work. It therefore requires authors to declare any conflict of interest they may have in relation to their research. Reviewers are also required to declare any conflict of interest they may have in relation to the articles they review. The journal reserves the right to reject any article suspected of containing an undeclared conflict of interest.

Misconduct

At Clío, plagiarism and self-plagiarism are not tolerated in publications. We reserve the right to check received manuscripts using an appropriate plagiarism detection tool, including ideas, words, data or other material produced by another person without referencing the original source.
